Waste Collection & Recycling
Overview
Millions of tons of waste of are generated and collected regularly in cities across America, and New York City is one of the largest contributors to the equation. Throughout the five Boroughs of the City, on Long Island and in Westchester, Metropolitan collects and processes thousands of tons of waste every day. Within the tonnage collected, a good percentage of the material can be extracted from the mix and can be used again in the supply-chain of the manufacturing of new products. Essentially, this is the nature of recycling.
The extraction process is followed by the sorting of respective materials into designated areas where they may be further processed into compressed units known as bales. Bales of recyclable paper, plastic and metal are then shipped to manufacturing locations around the world, and many of the new products made with such material will be labeled as “Made from Recycled Material” or “Made with Post-Consumer Waste.”
Extracting recyclable material from the waste stream for reentry into the supply-chain is one of the very best habits that we can include in our daily activities as citizens of the Earth. By recycling we help to sustain the environment in several ways. The immediate benefit is that recyclable material is diverted from the landfill. The long-term benefit is that, by adding a percentage of recycled material to the production of new goods, fewer natural resources, such as trees and oil, are used in the process.
Preserving the ecology and protecting the environment are the reasons that we do and should recycle. Metropolitan Recycling is extremely proud to be an important part of the process.
