About Us
Metropolitan is the largest privately owned and operated material recovery in the City of New York and one of the largest waste removal companies in the City. Located in East New York, Brooklyn, MPR operates 3 facilities 24 hours a day, processing over 15,000 tons of recycling material per month six days a week. We are licensed by the New York City Business Integrity Commission and our facilities are registered with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
Upon the acquisition in 2002 by Metropolitan of BFI/Allied Waste’s Brooklyn operation, Gregory Bianco, Chief Executive Officer, embarked on a strategy to upgrade the plant’s technology. At a cost of $7 million, Metropolitan re-tooled and upgraded the processing technology of the former BFI/Allied plant to create a state-of-the-art recyclables processing facility expanding its paper handling capacity from 20 tons per hour to 50 tons per hour. The 3 facilities located at 854 Shepherd Avenue and 857 Essex Street, 992 Essex Street, and 978 Essex Street, comprising over 117,000 square feet of processing floor space, the company has existing capacity to process 1,100 tons per day of waste paper and co-mingled recyclables. We currently process 660 tons per day and have excess capacity to process MGP co-mingled recyclables which at present is delivered to other sub-contractors as waste.
Metropolitan is the only recycling facility in the City of New York with high-efficiency sorting capability – enabling the company to extract high quality cardboard and other commodities from the waste stream which translates into competitive pricing and savings pass through to the customer. Due to its intensive post-recycling program, the company is able to substantially reduce residual volumes thereby minimizing disposal costs.
The company currently services over 2000 customer sites throughout the 5 boroughs and operates a truck fleet of 35 collection vehicles, 327 balers and compaction equipment installed at customer locations. The work force has also expanded to over 170 employees -- all of whom live in the surrounding neighborhoods and represent a diverse cross-section of our city.
Metropolitan is poised to expand through acquisitions and development projects including our newest venture located in Detroit, Michigan. We are scheduled to commence operations at 2 acceptance and processing facilities serving the greater Detroit area which will process fiber and co-mingled metal, glass and plastic.
